Team Lightning has once again entered another FIRST LEGO League competition. This year we have been challenged to create a robot designed to complete various tasks. We also have to create a project to help lower the usage of fossil fuels in a city. A small team of 4 will have to work together to complete these tasks, hoping that it will take them far in this years FLL...

Team Lightning are competing again this year in the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Competition. The team of 4, years 7 and 8 pupils, have been challenged to design and build a robot that can autonomously complete as many tasks on a board as possible to accumulate points. They are also working on a project surrounding the theme of space travel.
With maintaining core values and determination, the team hope to do well on January 18th at the Welsh Regional Competition. The techno camps was in June. 8 members of the team went to the event to won the live challenge with a adapted version of the lego 3D printer which was able to create lego designs with imputed designs specified by the user. We won the live challenge using a adapted version of the 3D printer which put techno camps on a piece of paper that was on the board. The challenge was to create a way of advertising for techno camps.
Team Lightning finished and participated in the TechnoClubs competition in July. The two teams entered did extremely well for their first competition and one team came second in the live challenge!
We now have these pupils and some more participating in this year's FLL season, based around the theme of Hydro Dynamics. They will be working on both the project and robot game for this competition. See more about this competition on the "present" tab. The next competition for us is in July. Joe, Ben and Edward are currently coaching a younger team of pupils. This years theme is creating something that would aid people who are dissabled. We are still going to use the Lego Mindstorm Kits for it.
Another busy week. On Tuesday, Stewart Powell from TechnoCamps joined us again with our preparations. His help allowed us to go through half of the robot game and get it working really reliable and we had the chance to present our project idea. We also went through our core values; what it meant to work as a team. New team shirts are being ordered tomorrow.
Another busy week follows now. With school not being open tomorrow, the team is working on creating gifts for other teams at the event. This will include two 3D printed keyrings displaying our two team logos. Also in the pack will be a personalized letter. We are still amazed by how far we have come. To represent Wales and Britain among other teams in an international competition abroad has encouraged the team work very hard. We have now been confirmed that the event will be live streamed, and more thoroughly than the competition in Bristol. More information on both how to keep up to date and watch the event will be posted later. The whole team would like to say a huge Thank You to all the companies and individuals who have supported us along the way. We would definitely not be in this position if we didn't have the support from the public. If you haven't yet donated money to the team, there is still time (via this link http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/team-lightning). Over the next week, there will be regular updates on the progress. We will try and include videos of each section of the robot game and an overview of our project idea. Not long to go now!!! We have started a fundraiser to help with extra little bits that we need to get. On Tuesday Stuart, from TechnoCamps, came to speak to us about the competition. TechnoCamps have been involved with the school's robotics and programming for many years now and we are lucky to have Stuart coming to America with us. This visit helped us improve how we are going to present and finalise our product to impress the judges.
We are coming into school a few days in the holidays to work on the competition to get the three aspects to the highest standard we can. We are currently looking at live vlogging where at certain times of the day we will video activites. Whilst we are away, you can keep up to date with what we are doing through Facebook. This week the team have been working very hard on the robot game. After many hours our robot can now complete most of the missions, getting over 200 points in 1 minute 40 seconds. This week we are spending a couple of hours working on the last missions earning us over 330 points if all goes well on the day.
We have now bought both the flight tickets and hotel for the competition. Again thank you everyone for the support we have received.
This week we have continued with the robot game. In our first week of doing it, we have already managed to get over 100 points, which is more than what we got in Bristol for the whole round. We are now working on moving towards the east side of the board and to complete missions over there.
We have started to contact more business for support with funding for this competition and that is going well. A small correction to last week's post, we are in the Cambrian News, not the Tivy-Side and we are currently on page 3. This week we are starting to 3D prints parts for the project and making the idea more reliable. So this week the knowledge of going to America finally sunk in. Not much went on with the robot, but we have discussed plans to further develop the project side to something bigger, that could actually sell as a product. We have been working on trying to get funding by asking local businesses. On Friday the team were interviewed by a Tivy-Side representative who asked us about the competition. There will be an article about this in next week's issue or the issue after that.
This next week we are planning to begin with the robot again. We are not changing the overall robot design, but making new attachments and changing our strategies to achieve the most amount of points we can in the time we have got. We are also planning to do a weekly vlog about preparing for the competition. |
